Established in 1980, PTI was founded with core values of safety, dependability, and customer service.  Those same three fundamentals continue to be steadfast for PTI for nearly 40 years.

Today PTI is comprised of over 5,000 associates providing transportation services to some of the largest companies in the railroad, mining and energy industries.

Crew Transportation

What is Crew Transportation?

Crew transportation is the process of driving railroad train crews from point A to point B. These railroad crews need transportation to get to their starting point as well as brought back home after their route is complete.

Much like a shuttle service, PTI receives around-the-clock requests from our railroad customers to pick up and drop off train crews. PTI dispatchers match up drivers with these trips and the drivers safely transport the crews to their destinations. Taking place thousands of times a day, these trips can range from a few miles to a few hundred miles.

Operating 24 hours, 365 days a year while providing these services, PTI will travel over 100 million miles every year throughout the United States.

PTI specializes in Crew Transportation throughout the continental United States

Company History

As part of United Companies, Inc., Professional Transportation, Inc. (PTI) was founded in 1980 and began its operations serving as a crew transportation service for Class I railroads in the Midwest. PTI’s focus is on safety, dependability, and on-time performance for over-the-road and dedicated yard van services to some of the biggest companies in the railroad industries. Those same three fundamentals continue to be steadfast for PTI.

Starting small in Evansville, IN, PTI expanded its operations through business contracts with the Dearborn, Central, Georgia and Alabama Divisions of Norfolk Southern and the Virginia Territory of CSXT and assumed the operations of a competitor with locations in five southern states.

As the company continued to expand its business, PTI announced in 2010 that Union Pacific (UP), one of their major railroad customers, awarded the company two new Crew Transportation Service Unit contracts increasing the total number of UP Service Units. With the new territories, the company added 22 new branch locations, approximately 90 additional fleet vans, and an estimated 300 employees bring staff totals to 3,200.

Crew transportation services for the railroad industry.

Railroad transportation volume growth has continued since this 2010 expansion with PTI continuing to grow through winning new contracts due to our expertise in logistics and safety as well as through targeted acquisitions of related business in our industry. PTI has now grown to over 250 locations nationwide and over 5,000 employees providing safe, on-time, quality customer service.

PTI’s parent organization, United Companies, has evolved into a multifaceted financial and transportation services organization with more than 3,000 corporate accounts. With 260 locations and 6,100 employees, United Companies has direct operations in 38 states and the District of Columbia, and manages assets in all 50 states as well as internationally in Canada and Mexico.

Established on basic business values that have stayed consistent through more than four decades of existence, United Companies is a group of companies providing solutions in Asset Management, Logistics and Transportation, and Financial Services.

What started in 1964 as an automotive retail and vehicle leasing operation has evolved into an international corporation that is committed to strategic growth for all its companies, while continuing to honor its original mission statement of “…being a growth-oriented organization providing quality products and service that exceed customer expectations.”

PTI’s corporate headquarters is located in Evansville, Indiana, with Operations Managers and regional offices strategically located throughout the United States.
